Tilly the Turtle is the end result of a several month long project we designed and managed for Hull University to highlight their #myplasticpledge message. After collecting more than 15,000 pieces of plastic waste from the Humber Street Sesh and Freedom Festival, as well as from the Hull University campus, we set about creating a huge art installation, to be unveiled at the launch of the British Science Festival 2018.
The Drunk Animal Creative Studio build team worked tirelessly over two weeks to build the framework, water-filled base and turtle, which measures almost 14ft high. The install caused a bit of a stir and media from across the city, and the region flocked to see Tilly in place outside the Hull University library. Since her install she has enjoyed national media coverage and continues to spark discussion about plastic waste and its effect on our oceans.
