Unlocking creativity

Unlocking creativity

It’s Mental Health Awareness week and we are lucky to have been involved in a few projects that promote how drawing can have a major influence on children’s ability to express themselves. On this blog post, we discuss our involvement in the Three Minute Heroes project, the TEDx Talk our Creative Director gave and our recent SuperHero day workshop. Let’s get started…..

The Three Minute Heroes

Three Minute Heroes is a campaign that supports and encourages young people to use creative writing and music to talk openly and safely about what’s on their mind. It’s a strong initiative that integrates music and mental health.

Drunk Animal Creative Studio supported the project by developing their website and taking part in their launch event. During the event launch, our CEO and prolific artist, Calvin Innes, created a large mural alongside a number of school children. The large piece, created with Sharpies is now on display at The Warren youth Centre in Hull.

The Three Minute Heroes is dedicated to ensuring young people have their voices heard. Go to http://threeminuteheroes.com/help-support/ for more information.

Unlocking a world of creativity in children through illustration

Last year, our Creative Director, Calvin Innes, gave a TEDx Talk which revealed how drawing can have a major influence on children’s ability to express themselves.

Calvin strongly believes that drawing allows children to express their thoughts in a way that nothing else can.  His talk revealed how drawing can have a major influence on children’s ability to express themselves – in ways they may never have been able to do through the written word. In addition to being CEO of Dunk Animal Creative Studio, Calvin is an artist, illustrator, author and cartoonist who has spent the last 20 years creating all kinds of weird and wonderful illustrations for thousands of different projects. His ethos has always been, ‘if it can be drawn on, it probably should be drawn on’. This ethos has sparked a diverse artistic career spanning children’s book illustration, concept art development, comic book illustration, toy design, large-scale mural painting and even tattoo art. He has delivered interactive drawing workshops for schools across the UK, helping children to embrace their inner creativity, express their ideas and imagination through art, and most of all, to have fun through drawing.

Calvin’s talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQ7KYSXy3N4

SuperHero Day

Viking FM Cash for Kids Superhero Day was on the 10th of May this year. We saw people and businesses from all over Hull and the surrounding area, take part in this fantastic event and really make a difference. Viking FM Cash for Kids is supporting Health Stars and looking to add a sparkle to a new mental health in-patient unit for young people across Hull, East Yorkshire, and Northern Lincolnshire. Their aim is to raise £25,000 in order to provide a music studio, which will give children access to music therapy on the grounds.

We saw people dressed up as wickedly cool superheroes, take part in a sponsored run, had a cake sale and even changed their website to match the superhero theme! It was great to see everyone go all out and for such a great cause.

Drunk Animal Creative Studio was proud to take part in this great event! We were happy to be involved and ran an interactive Superhero drawing workshop for the students from Maybury Primary School! Calvin has a history of helping children embrace their inner creativity, express their ideas and imagination, all through art.

The entire event was a fantastic experience and we were super proud to have been involved. Viking FM Cash for Kids has raised a whopping £13,382 for superhero day. For more information or to see how you can be a hero and help, go to http://ow.ly/oAcW50ublDt.
