Hull has so many young performers just waiting to showcase their talents, yet the cancellation of the annual Rock Challenge means that they don’t have the same opportunities as before. That’s why Drunk Animal Creative Studio has teamed up with National Event Support to launch Chance to Dance, a brand new event that invites schools and youth groups to enter teams and take part in an exciting performance challenge.

We’re looking for primary schools, secondary schools and youth groups to get involved by signing up to the challenge and the deadline is Monday 20th January, so you don’t have long left to apply. All participating schools will receive £100 back towards equipment and resources as a thank you for taking part, kindly funded by National Event Support.

In preparation for the event, each team will create a performance that’s 5-8 minutes long, revolving around their chosen theme that can be anything at all, so there’s plenty of room for creativity and imagination. The group size needs to be a minimum of 10-15 performers and schools can also include a stage crew, such as adults and students who manage the hair, wardrobe, makeup, stage support, lighting and sound. If you’re a youth group, your team must allocate one dedicated Youth Liaison to be the direct contact between you and the Chance to Dance event team. To make things easier, we’ve categorised specific information on the Chance to Dance website for primary schools, secondary schools and youth groups.

Performances will be judged by theatre and dance professionals from the region based on three criteria: production, dance, and overall performance. The top three groups of each division will receive prizes to encourage participation in performing arts, such as workshops from world-class choreographers and tickets to touring theatre shows.

We’ve also welcomed on board Scribes Digital Print, GB Recruitment and Big Pink Fish as event sponsors, which helps us to make the challenge even bigger and better than we’d ever dreamed. If your business would also like to support the event, find out more about our sponsorship packages.

There are dozens of schools in Hull with pupils who aspire to perform for a living, plus multiple arts organisations that provide amazing dance and music classes to young people. We believe that Chance to Dance will bring together children and teenagers from across the city’s many communities and allow them to not only compete to win fantastic prizes, but also experience performances by other young people that they’ve never met before. The result will be a new opportunity for young performers to meet each other, be inspired whilst inspiring others, and showcase their skills, passion and flair to a large audience.

It really is going to be an utterly awesome event, so please do get involved any way you can and spread the word by following Chance to Dance on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
