Schools, youth groups and dance teams will be battling it out at Hull’s Bonus Arena on 26 and 27 June in a bid to be crowned the 2020 Chance to Dance Champions.

Chance to Dance, a new performance challenge for young people across East Yorkshire, North Lincolnshire and North East Lincolnshire will see primary schools, secondary schools, youth groups and dance teams showcase their creativity through dance performances.

More than 800 students have signed up to take part in the challenge since it launched in December, and with five days to go before registration closes, the team behind the new competition is encouraging anyone who thinks they have what it takes to sign up.

Event organiser Jessica Thorp, said; “We’ve been overwhelmed with the number of teams that have already signed up to support the event in its first year. It’s set to be a fantastic event and we’re really looking forward to working with the schools in the run up to the live finals in June.”

As part of the competition, participants will get the chance to work with leading choreographers, make up artists, set designers and lighting technicians to create a showstopping performance. Unlike other dance competitions, there will be as much emphasis put on the behind the scenes work, as there will be on the dance performance on the night.

We were conscious that not everyone is a dancer, but we didn’t want that to stop anyone that wanted to, to get involved,” said Jess. “Our masterclasses and workshops will allow all students to be part of the experience, giving them the chance to experience the technical side of performance. Everything from the lighting, to the set, makeup, hair and costumes will be considered on the night; it will truly be a team effort.”

As well as showcasing the dance talent in the region, the competition will also help to boost vital interpersonal skills including confidence, resilience and team working; all known to support the positive progression of young people into adulthood.
